Extract from Philippe Gordien
Émile GOUÉ considered music as the very expression of his inner life. Little by little, through sobriety he managed to synthesize his work and develop a real doctrine that was born during his captivity. That doctrine may be summed up as follows

- Assertion of tonality – broadened to polymodality, seemingly atonal where the feeling of a tonic remains as a reference point for sensibility

- Predilection for contrapuntal writing.

- A bithematic spirit first – then feeling he needed unity, following the example of J.S. BACH a monothematic one with an only generative theme leading his whole work.
